From summer camps for kids, to chair yoga for seniors there’s plenty to do in and around Coral Springs, and some of it’s free! Children’s Fitness in South Florida
Coral Springs Parks and Recreation has multiple offerings for children and teens. Classes, camps and programs from ages 4-14 include Aquatic Center programs for swimming, water polo, diving and synchronized swim. Sports-based summer camps center on swimming, diving, soccer, tennis and more. Classes are available for cheer & tumble, dance, baseball and karate. Kids Day Off drop-in programs take place throughout the year, where kids can sample any of the above activities.
Broward County offers a learn-to-swim program for children, ages 2 -10, as well as summer camps and year-round playgrounds, and recreational activities in their 50 parks. Horse camps take place at the Tradewinds Park and Stables for ages 9 – 14.
The largest youth sports organization in the area is overseen by the parks and recreation department. Team opportunities are available in baseball and softball, lacrosse, basketball, football, cheerleading, soccer and volleyball. American Red Cross Lifeguard training is popular with teens age 15 and older. The comprehensive program culminates in a certificate that lasts two years before renewal is necessary.
All Ages Fitness in South Florida
Masters and Adult swim programs are available at the Coral Springs Aquatic Center. Mommy & Me dance classes and Zumba classes take place multiple times per week, as well as a variety of interval training, strengthening and toning classes. Drop-ins at the athletic center complex are only $8.
Outdoor fitness opportunities are everywhere. The Florida climate makes it easy to walk, jog and run outdoors nearly any time of the year. The best parks and trails include the Conservation Levee Trail, a 27-mile loop for walkers, runners and cyclists. The Atlantic Trailhead offers an entrance point with ample parking at the western edge of Atlantic Boulevard. Broward County manages jogging paths throughout a dozen parks, as well as cycling trails in 14 parks, mountain bike trails in two parks, tennis courts in seven parks, as well as equestrian trails and two pools.
Broward County manages a velodrome in Hollywood with an adjacent road course, suitable for cycling or in-line skating. The county also runs sports leagues for youth and adults, including lesser known sports such as cricket and netball. Disc golf continues to be popular with over five courses found at Broward County Parks.
Senior Fitness in South Florida
The Coral Springs Senior Center at Sartory Hall and the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex offer a variety of free fitness programs for seniors. All that’s needed to register is a driver’s license. Classes are open anyone age 55 or older at Sartory Hall and age 62 and older at the Aquatic Center. Programs include gentle stretching, ab mat classes, Strength & Tone, Sit & Fit, Cardio Classics and Thai Chi. A Qi Gong program is available at a small charge of $5 per class. Personal trainers work alongside geriatric nurses at each session.
